Orchards Mall Sues Overflow Church

The Orchards Mall doesn't want a church in its backyard. The mall is suing the Overflow Church to stop it from using the old Sears building. The Sears building's anonymous former owner donated the mall to the Overflow Church. Lead Pastor Rev. Brian Bennett says he's not surprised by the lawsuit, because he says the mall's owner is currently trying to sell the mall and leave the community. But, Bennett says he was discouraged, because the Overflow Church hoped to work with the mall. The mall's owners say changing the Sear's store into a church will hurt the mall and the stores inside. Bennett says he's currently trying to get a special use permit to use the Sears building in Benton Township as a church. Benton Township's Land Use Committee will host a public hearing on the matter March 22 at 7 p.m.
